My name is Lora Hibbard. Hi. On WordPress and Twitter I go by theinsomniakid, on the NaNoWriMo forums by Lora_Hex. I’m 22 years old at the time of writing this mildly self-indulgent little blurb, though my birthday is in October so that’s going to change very soon.
I’m American by birth (whatever being American really means), the daughter of a professor and a naval officer, and I’ve lived overseas (in England) for most of my life. No matter where I’ve been, I’ve had the strong and inexorable compulsion to create, mainly through the art of storytelling. I’ve been living in Nebraska for the last five and a bit years, where I’m currently inches away from getting my Bachelors Degree in English (British Literature and Creative Writing) with minors in History, Classical Studies and (possibly) Medieval and Renaissance Studies from the University of Nebraska. My expected graduation date is mid-December 2010.
Yes, in case you were wondering, I DO find this terrifying.
The goals post-graduation? To write mostly, to attempt the madness that is becoming published and to tell my stories professionally. I’m unsure as to how this will go, but I hope to support myself with some form of wage-slave job until I am successful. I’m also considering going to Graduate School to study Library Science, especially Archiving and Preservation. Old books are one of my favourite things, along with dancing in the rain and eating cheese.
I write primarily in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Genres when working on novels and short stories. I’m a voracious reader. I’m also a participant in National Novel Writing Month, and two time winner. I hope to add another win to that record in November 2010. This blog will primarily be used to detail my experiences before, during and after NaNoWriMo, be they experiences with life, school, the writing process, philosophy, or just pictures of cats I found on the internet. Along the way I also hope to impart some of my wisdom (at least that’s what I call it) accrued after a couple years of doing this NaNoWriMo business, mentioning some of my favourite tips, tricks and strategies for going to 50k and beyond.
When I’m not writing I have a myriad of strange hobbies and interests to keep me occupied. I’m a full-time student until December, which eats away a large portion of my waking hours. I also work at a campus library, where I spend my time occasionally assisting (i.e. harassing) patrons, but mostly watching TV shows in marathons and surfing the internet. I also play Dungeons and Dragons with some of my local college amigos, which is exactly as nerdy as it sounds.
I’m definitely a daydreamer with a compulsive and addictive personality. I’m too poor to be a smoker or an alcoholic (but indulge in both poisons regardless on occasion), I’m a vegetarian, an agnostic, a lover of interesting cheeses and philosophical debates. I have many friends but few close confidantes. I have a boyfriend, Jeff, who is also a writer, but consider myself pansexual. I have a tattoo of a yin-yang symbol between my shoulderblades. I have a tendency to talk WAY too much about my personal life and every random thing that comes into my head. I’m snarky and caustic about the human race at large, but am an optimist and lover of life at heart.
If all that hasn’t scared you away, then welcome. Hopefully this journal, this record of my experiences as a writer and wannabe novelist will be interesting and/or useful to your existence.
(shitty webcam photo of the author at the time of writing this post. Note the books indicating she is at work, and the NaNoWriMo shirt she wore today like a cool kid).
(and here’s a slightly less shitty webcam photo of the author in her natural state, which is half-asleep and daydreamy while sitting around waiting for classes to start).
NOTE ON THE HEADER:
The header of my blog is one I custom made out of a picture I took at Powell’s Books in Portland, Oregon in March 2010. If you can ever go there, it’s wonderful. I believe it’s a picture of the Sci-fi/fantasy section.
